Film NightWednesday, July 24 at 6:30 p.m. Cooked: Survival by Zip Code Discussion will follow • snacks provided! “In the summer of 1995, Chicago experienced an unthinkable disaster, when extremely high humidity and a layer of heat-retaining pollution drove the heat index up to more than 126 degrees. Cooked: Survival by Zip Code tells the story of this tragic heatwave, the most traumatic in U.S. history, in which 739 citizens died over the course of just a single week, most of them poor, elderly, and African American. “When peeled away from the shocking headlines, the story reveals the less newsworthy but long-term crisis of pernicious poverty, economic, and social isolation and racism. Cooked is a story about life, death, and the politics of crisis in an American city that asks the question: Was this a one-time tragedy, or an appalling trend?” —2024 Independent Television Service (ITVS) For more infomation visit: https://www.pbs.org/independentlens/documentaries/cooked-survival-by-zip-code/

The Gallery at Grace, July & AugustPhotographs by Kate Kinney In black and white photography, Grace’s own Kate Kinney sees things in a new way. “Searching for light and dark is a spiritual act. And grey tones help create the photograph. My philosophy is that living in the grey is just right. What a great way to see the world: a camera, a train, and amazing people in Bhutan and India.” Join Kate and learn about her travels and photographs at a reception during coffee hour on July 21. |

Youth Sailing Trip Aboard the AdventuressAugust 28 – 31 All high school youth — rising freshman through recently graduated seniors — are invited on a trip of a lifetime aboard the historic schooner, Adventuress. We will spend 4 days/3 nights onboard this 113-foot ship, sailing through the waters of the Salish Sea. Along the way, we will learn about navigation and marine biology (Adventuress is a floating lab!); we'll search for whales and other wildlife; we'll engage in community building activities; cook meals together; create music and prayer; and even take turns sailing the ship! We will board the Adventuress at the Port of Everett Marina on Wednesday, August 28 at 10:00 a.m. and return to the Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle on Saturday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m. $200/person.
